This section of the website concerns work done in support of the National Cancer Institute's "Extraordinary Opportunity in Cancer Communications". These webpages reflect work done for the National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), Office of the Director (OD), during 1998-2000, and 2001-2002 under a consulting contract, and during 2000-2001 under an IPA loan agreement with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
The "Extraordinary Opportunity in Cancer Communications" is a multi-year, institute-wide effort which leverages current and emerging technologies and seeks to "understand and apply the most effective communications approaches to maximize access to and use of cancer information by all who need it." This specific "Opportunity" is one of a series of "extraordinary opportunities" defined by the National Cancer Institute as areas in which focused efforts and increased resources might produce dramatic progress.
"The [NCI] Communications Opportunity Leadership Team (COLT), has primary responsibility for making the communications opportunity a reality. The COLT includes both internal NCI staff, as well as representatives from the NIH, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. COLT members also include extramural researchers, consumer liaisons, cancer advocates, and industry representatives."
